Zephyr at ΑΓΑΠΗΣΕΙΣ is posting a series of stories about Bible translation checking in Papua New Guinea. Getting the nuances of a verse such as Luke 6:37 right proves to be very difficult. In the New Living Translation the start of this verse reads:
Do not judge others, and you will not be judged.
But in Goiniri Onnele a literal back translation into English is:
“Do not look around nothing at people with sharp liver-stomachs, then God too will not look around at you with a sharp liver-stomach.”
Why such a colourful translation? Read more to find out.
