Nathan was part of the Wycliffe-PCI team that visited the Oku people of Cameroon this past summer and has just produced this video about their time overseas.
As you’ll see from the video, in one sense there is very little that short-term teams can do in a few weeks in a different culture. But in another sense God can use the efforts of the team, and in particular the relationships that they build, to produce lasting fruit both in them and among the people they’re living with, the impact of which is impossible to measure.
The most successful short-term teams tend to be those who are focussed not on what they can do, but rather on what they can learn -- from God, from their team-mates and from the people they’re living amongst.
Wycliffe’s 2009 summer Engage teams will be going to Burkina Faso, Cameroon and a location in southeast Asia, to engage with the local people and witness what God is doing in and through Bible translation. To find out more about the teams and how you can be a part of them, take a look at the Engage page.

Don’t go on a short term team. Don’t go on missions. You might get a tummy bug or have to spend time with some people you’d rather not. It’s dangerous out there as well! Leave it to someone else, I’m sure there are plenty of other people better qualified for the whole missions thing than you are.
