Engage - Cameroon 2010
August
This is a fantastic opportunity to further develop a strong continuing link between Engage and the Ndop language project. The Ndop project covers 10 neighbouring and related languages spoken by people who live in villages in a flood-plain area of the beautiful, hilly North West Province of Cameroon.
Background: Since 2006, teams have helped mother-tongue literacy at the stage the project has been at. When the first team visited, the languages had no alphabets! Now, literacy primers are available and formal adult literacy classes have started. Most of Lukes gospel has been translated in two languages and is ready for use.
What is involved: The 2010 Engage team will work alongside the local and expatriate team involved in promoting mother-tongue literacy and encouraging the use of the translated Scriptures. You will have lots of opportunities to engage with the local church and community, observe Bible translation in progress, spend a weekend staying with a local Christian family in their own compound - as well as help with the corn harvest in the fields and visit a pottery.
You should be prepared to learn what it means to live and work within a local community, building relationships, listening and learning as well as contributing to the project. Come prepared for some basic language learning you'll want to be able to at least greet people in their own language!
You'll work with local children's workers to implement a childrens holiday Bible club programme with a difference! The programme will enable the children to learn in their own mother tongue. This means story telling, scripture memorisation and song, as well as games and crafts, will all have an emphasis on helping children begin to learn Biblical truths in their own language. We will design the programme with local church leaders before your arrival and then youll help to deliver it.
Requirements: This team will ideally be made up of around six people including at least one leader. Have you:
- an aptitude for language and an interest in literacy?
- a heart for equipping and training others AND learning from others?
- sufficient maturity to be able to handle yourself well in a cross cultural setting?
- some teacher training or experience would be very helpful, but is not a requirement.
