What is the Specialist Bench?

The Specialist Bench is a trusted pool of skilled professionals offering advisory, coaching, and operational support to partners aligned with Wycliffe’s mission. Available for short-term assignments, specialists are matched by strategic fit and experience – serving with skill and building for the kingdom.

We support behind-the-scenes operational strengthening – helping partners build healthier systems so they can sustain and grow their mission.

Who is it for?

Partner organisations engaged in ministry and operational development who have a clear capacity need (eg finance processes, HR foundations, governance strengthening, systems improvement, planning, or delivery support).

Check before you start

This page will help you decide if the Specialist Bench is right for your situation – before you submit a request. That’s intentional: good services help users understand fit and what they need to do next at the start point.

This is a good fit when you…
  • have a defined operational challenge and are ready to act
  • can commit time for discovery, decision-making, and follow-through
  • want support that builds capability (not just ‘done for you’ delivery).
This is not the right route when you…
  • need emergency safeguarding support (use the safeguarding route below)
  • need immediate IT incident response or urgent crisis operations
  • want consultancy-style delivery without internal ownership and participation.

Why it matters

Strong operations enable stronger mission execution.

When finance, HR, systems, governance and planning are healthy, organisations can steward resources well and focus on their core calling.

What partners gain
  • Deeper partnering: practical, relational support that strengthens trust and shared mission.
  • Capacity development: skills transfer and sustainable operational improvements.
  • Maximising impact: helping partners serve more effectively with the same resources.
  • Behind-the-scenes expertise: access to specialists who can accelerate progress in complex operational areas.

Operational strength isn’t ‘extra’ – it’s part of faithful stewardship

Skills toolbox

What types of skills are in the toolbox?

Below are typical areas and examples. If you’re unsure where your need fits, submit a request and we’ll clarify in the discovery call.

Toolbox area Examples of support outcomes (illustrative)
Project management Project planning and delivery support; PMO governance/operations; milestone and risk tracking
Finance Budgeting support; finance process improvement; financial systems set-up or optimisation
HR HR policy development; strategic workforce planning; people data and systems strengthening
Strategy Vision refinement; planning workshops; operational strategy and prioritisation support
IT and operations CRM or core systems support; cloud systems; process optimisation; operational workflows
Governance Risk management; compliance guidance; board/governance practice strengthening

We prioritise practical outcomes and partner ownership. The specialist’s role is to strengthen capabilities and systems – not to replace local leadership.

How it works

We use a clear, staged process so expectations are agreed before work begins, and so partners and specialists can collaborate with confidence.

Step 1 — Submit a request

Use the Partner Request Form. You’ll share the nature of the need, desired outcomes, timeline, and main contact.

Step 2 — Discovery call and needs assessment

We clarify the need, confirm fit, and agree what ‘success’ looks like.

Step 3 — Matching

We identify and approach a specialist (or small specialist team) based on alignment and availability.

Step 4 — Scope agreement

We confirm scope, deliverables, timeline, meeting rhythm, confidentiality expectations, points of contact, and how to escalate concerns.

Step 5 — Deployment and support

The specialist works alongside the partner team, with lightweight check-ins to ensure progress and clarity.

Step 6 — Monitoring, evaluation and story capture

We review outcomes, gather feedback, and (with permission) capture learning and stories that celebrate God’s work through strengthened operations.

Serve with excellence. For God’s glory
