‘Minority people in my country are in a challenging situation, partly due to the lack of access to education. It severely affects their well-being spiritually, emotionally and physically,’ says one student from Southeast Asia, who is studying on the MA Language, Community and Development programme at SLS.

‘I believe that God led me here to be equipped to serve people in literacy and education. I pray that my humble work will help open the door to the next generation to use the Scriptures and to be transformed.’

SLS, at Moorlands College, helps people from across Europe and beyond to prepare to be effective parts of the Bible translation, language and development movement.

Reflecting the complexity of these contexts, the central focus is ensuring students are equipped to be good listeners and learners, and flexible, kingdom-focused colleagues.

This means several parts of the training are applicable for cross-cultural work in and through the church here in the UK, as well as elsewhere in the world. Alongside training in these interpersonal qualities, we provide subject-specific training in the technical areas of Scripture engagement, literacy and education, linguistics, and Bible translation.

The first two modules of the Masters in Language, Community and Development – together forming Foundations for Living and Working Cross-Culturally – are particularly relevant for any individuals or teams preparing to work cross-culturally in the UK or overseas. They aim to provide a strong introduction to many of the considerations around cross-cultural work and are therefore appropriate to all fields of work.
