Today is a day to spend a few moments remembering the languages of the world – and the people who speak them.

Today we join with communities around the world to celebrate International Mother Language Day, UNESCO’s day for recognising the importance and place of languages in our world.

As the UNESCO says on its website:

‘The year 2025 marks the 25th anniversary of International Mother Language Day. This milestone highlights a quarter-century of dedicated efforts to preserve linguistic diversity and promote the use of mother tongues. It serves as a significant opportunity to reflect on achievements, renew commitments, and emphasize the critical role of language preservation in safeguarding cultural heritage, improving education outcomes and creating more peaceful, sustainable societies.’

And, of course, today is also a day to remember and celebrate all the amazing work being done by Bible translators to unlock God’s word for every heart – and every nation, tribe, people and language (Revelation 7:9).

Across the world, people are celebrating all things language, at international, national and local levels. Here is just one of the local celebrations taking place today:

How wonderful to see that this celebration in Mexico is not just celebrating Spanish, but also the Nahuatl (hundreds of thousands of speakers) and Popoluca (tens of thousands of speakers) languages spoken in the area too.

So let us stop, take a moment, and thank God for all the languages around the world, and for the people who speak them.

Let’s join with Wycliffe Togo-Benin, which sent out the following for today:

  • Praise God for the beauty and diversity of the world’s languages!
  • Pray that this day will provide opportunities to highlight the value and importance of people’s mother languages.
  • Pray for God’s blessings on Wycliffe and its partners as they advocate for and help to develop the world’s languages.

And let’s pray for all that God is doing through Bible translation:

  • If you have the Bible in your language, thank God! If you don’t, pray expectantly for the day when you will.
  • Praise God for the incredible progress being made in Bible translation, and for the acceleration that is happening.
  • Pray for the extraordinary work that is going on among so many of the world’s languages. Pray also for Wycliffe and its partner organisations, faithfully serving alongside local peoples and communities.
  • Pray for the coming of the day when everyone can know Jesus through the Bible.
